Kingston Synagogues Destroyed by Fire
December 11, 1882
Reported by the Daily Gleaner newspaper.
The Spanish and Portuguese Jewish Synagogue at the north easy corner
of Princess Street and Water Lane (consecrated 1750), and the English
and German Jewish Synagogue at the south west corner of Orange and Barry
Streets (built 1789) are destroyed by a fire in Kingston. Also destroyed
is the building occupied by the Government Savings Bank on the north side
of Port Royal Street between Duke Street and John's lane. Over 500 buildings
are destroyed. Five persons are burnt to death.
